iondan: Dashboard Patch (Dashboard)
I failed to meet my self imposed quota of an entry per week. It's been a busy couple of weeks though, and I suffered a 4 day long power outage after this weeks storm. Most of the blame though lies in the fact that I feel like posting somewhat  lengthy entries as opposed to sort simple posts. I'm pretty sure that almost no one reads my posts anyway but I still like to make them somewhat thought provoking pieces and not short tweet like updates.

Anyhoo I'm working an a Mass Effect 2 post and I wanted to share this photo from my commute to my LCS today

I'm not sure if you can make it out but it's a Tank on a flatbed. Normally, I'll occasionally get stuck behind "wide load" flatbeds with pieces of sort-of modular houses on them. Today I looked at the flatbed's payload to see what I originally thought was a funny look matte green section of a house, was in fact a multi-ton war machine.

I should set this as my laptops background so I'm reminded to find a way to remove my wiper arms so I can sand them and paint them Matte black, the 12-year old factory paint on them is wearing off. Now they sell stuff like this
(www.uprproducts.com/mustang-billet-wiper-delete-kit-designer-94-polished.html) so I know they come off, but I'm not 100% sure they can go back on without replacing the entire arm.

Anyway, Stay Frosty

iondan: EH? (Larfleeze)
I admit it I got a bad case of Larfleeze ring envy when DC did the promotional ring give-away a few months ago. I just had to have every ring and an extra ring to tinker with. See I had already wanted that nifty JLA prop( www.dccomics.com/dcdirect/) They were offering but I didn't have the money and I didn't necessarily like the display base anyway. So when DC did the promotion I figured it was a great way to preview some comics I don't read and pickup the rings.

I had intended to build my own display base, more or less sort of a ring box that would display the rings vertically and possibly light-up. I still intend to build that it's just that project got pushed behind the DIN delete plate I was building for my car's interior that got held up because I can't find the piece of Balsa wood I was working with.

I had also intended to make a ring that lit up, which is why I had gotten an extra one. My LCS gave me an extra Red ring (though admittedly I was hoping for a Green) and I was going to use it as a template. For those of you unfamiliar with the rings design they look like this:

What I had intended to do was cut off the top circular piece with a Dremel (www.dremel.com/Pages/default.aspx), then drill and mount a small LED in the ring's face. I would power the LED with a small watch battery, and I would mount a small push toggle switch in between the circular piece and the ring's base (I'm good with simple electronics). The end result would've given me a light up ring that I would be able to turn on and off by pressing on (or rather clicking) the ring's face. (Before I go on I'd like to point out this was all under the assumption that the plastic top was hollow. had it not been hollow I would've either replaced it with some sort of cap or used the Dremel to hollow it out)

It's seem like my efforts won't be necessary however as DC-Direct has decided to make their own set of light-up rings.

This set lights up with an LED when its worn, which means there's probably a small monetary switch on the inside of the ring that gets depressed when it's put on a finger (did I mention I'm good with simple electronics?). There's a way to shut off the light feature and a way to change the batteries when they die (the latter of which was absent in my would-be design). Depending on my future monetary status I'll probally get this set of rings eventually.

So what do I intend to do with my spare ring? Well I had thought about painting it green and using the Dremel to engrave (seriously that tool does almost anything) a Green Lantern symbol similar to the Sodam Yat had in Legion Of Three Worlds so I could have a spare GL ring to wear to cons. It looks like DC remains a step ahead of me again though dcu.blog.dccomics.com/2010/01/26/who-doesnt-want-to-wear-a-flash-or-green-lantern-ring/ .

So the other day I was asked to assemble one of those laptop stands/tables. By no means was this a difficult task but I realized it could be done allot faster if I wasn't using the tool that came with the stand. See this laptop stand and honestly pretty much every piece of furniture that I've assembled came with an Allen Wrench.

That's this for those of you who are not familiar with tools

Those of you who play Guitar will recognize this as the tool you use for truss-rod adjustments.

Now my problem with the Allen Wrench is that the ones that come with these pieces of furniture are pretty small so they don't fit in my big hands very well and they can be slightly difficult to turn. A much easier tool for these jobs would be a Screwdriver (especially since I own several tools that double as electric screwdrivers). I would bet that the only reason that Allen Wrench is the primary tool for furniture is that it's definately cheaper to include that little tiny piece of metal than it is to throw in a screwdriver, thus these companies can put "Tools Included" on the box and make the product more enticing.

I have to question however, how many people are out there that don't own a screwdriver that they couldn't atleast give screws instead of Allen bolts? It's almost an essential tool like a can opener.  Have one of those little repair kits for glasses? Own one of those safety kits for your car? Have a few electronics that don't use rechargeable batteries? Chances are you have a screwdriver.  If you don't have a screwdriver you can get one with multiple head attachments for 5-10 bucks at your local drug store.

So until we lose the "Tools Included" mantra I'm going to be stuck with a pile of assorted Allen Wrenches inferior not only to the screwdriver but the ratcheting Allen wrenches I already have in my tool box.

Hello,

My name is Dan (little obvious, no?).

I've been intending on using this Journal/blog thing for awhile, but have been putting it off since I generally don't find myself interesting, which is why I don't have a Twitter or frequent my Facebook or MySpace. Anyhoo, I have been meaning to get used to the Journals formatting system so that I could inevitably post on Scans_Daily, which is the reason I'm here on DW in the first place and figured hands-on learning is to best approach.  So with that in mind let me bring you up to speed on myself and what kind of topics you can expect to see here.

I'm 20 (going to be 21 the 31st). I live in the moderately boring suburbs of NYC, in Westchester County  (yes the Xavier School Westchester), I'm a currently out of work Auto Mechanic (about a low C-level). I'm not currently in school but I'm looking to either get ASE certified which requires 2-years full time shop experience, or to go to something like UTI or Lincoln Tech (But I want to go on my own dime).I'm not into sports unless you count WRC or NHRA, because I don't. Relationship wise I'm single and don't have many friends. Like I said boring.

Here's what you, and I use that term loosely as a I don't expect to get many (if any ) readers. Most of my post will either be about comics, cars, pop culture, or what I'm going to call "Random Rants". Comics will most likely be my thoughts on a particular issue or TPB. I'd like to do reviews but due to my financial situation I don't get many comics or TPB to review and I really only hit the LCS on a 2 week basis anyway so my reviews would be stale. Cars will most likely be my thoughts on a particular model, manufacturer,Technology, or my experiences as I fix either my car or my relatives cars. Pop Culture is quite the blanket term, expect anything from movies, to video games, or even celebrity gossip. Random Rants as the name implys will be pretty much my short opinions on a random things that don't necessarily fall into the other topics. Maybe I'll occasionally throw in a post about me, but like I said I think I'm boring so I wouldn't expect to see too much of those.

Ok so I think this post pretty much establishes a decent background for me and what you can expect from this blog. I'll try to get at the very least a random rant every week, but I can't make any promises. So until I post again.
